It seems like just yesterday you were arriving on campus and now — we’re already looking ahead to summer and graduation. You’ve accomplished a lot with your time on campus and you should be proud of it all, both inside and outside the classroom.
BE EXCITED ABOUT WHAT’S NEXT
The end of the semester is an exciting time, filled with celebrations and summer adventures on the horizon! If you’re graduating, you probably feel a mix of emotions … you may feel nervous about this next chapter. Whether you’re heading to grad school or launching into industry — these are big transitions. It’s normal to have nerves about the future, and we’re here to provide tips that help.
Here are 10 tips if you’re feeling nervous about graduation and starting your next journey:
-
It’s never too soon to get on a schedule.
Don’t wait until you’ve gotten settled, get into a routine that feels supportive early on. You can always mix it up later if you need to. -
Get organized early.
The hardest time to get your inbox in order is when it’s a disaster. Set yourself up for success by creating strong physical and digital organization systems. Hint: folders are your friend! -
Find a trusted mentor.
Go to someone a year or two farther along in their career who can offer advice and support. -
Create community outside of work.
Finding interests and friends can help prevent burnout and improve work/life balance. -
Use your resources.
If you’re changing health insurance, moving, or looking for the best 401k plan, most companies will have HR departments or employee assistance programs to answer questions. Pro tip: Career Services at WVU is for alumni too! -
Make time for hobbies.
Has it been a while since you’ve picked up a book for enjoyment? Maybe you love playing spike ball but don’t have your go-to foursome anymore … creating a full and enjoyable life outside of work can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. -
Avoid comparisons.
Everyone’s career paths look different, even within industries. Instead of playing the comparison game, lean into curiosity. Ask questions, and pivot if necessary! -
Stay connected with college friends.
You may not be sure when you’ll see each other again so prioritize connecting regularly and keeping those bonds strong. This can help you feel grounded. -
Remember that nothing is new forever.
Think back to your first year of college. The things that felt overwhelming then, like navigating the PRT, finding your classes, and understanding where to turn in an assignment on eCampus, are now second nature! You’ll grow and learn in this new phase too, and soon enough you’ll feel more confident in this new stage of life. -
Accept that change is part of life.
This isn’t the first or the last time you will face a big transition. At the end of the day, most folks are doing their best to figure it out as they go, so if you don’t have it all figured out, congratulations! You’re right there with the rest of us.
