Master's Program Overview

Clinical Practicum for Social Work, Counseling, and Sport Psychology Students (One-Two Semesters Depending on Program)

A 16 hour a week practicum for trainees in social work, counseling, and sport psychology graduate programs. Trainees are trained to conduct triage (initial assessment) and intake (full assessment) interviews and to provide counseling to students appropriate to the level of the trainee’s competence. Many of our trainees provide alcohol assessment and counseling to mandated client students from the university. Trainees may also gain experience in facilitating psychoeducational groups and outreach activities for university students. 

Clinical Internship for Sport Psychology Students (Two Semesters)

A 20 hour a week internship for graduate sport psychology students who are interested in gaining more clinical experience. Trainees are trained to conduct triage (initial assessment) and intake (full assessment) interviews and to provide counseling to students appropriate to the level of the trainee’s competence. Many of our trainees provide alcohol assessment and counseling to mandated client students from the university. Trainees may also gain experience in facilitating psychoeducational groups and outreach activities for university students.

Clinical Internship for Counseling Students (One Semester)

A 40 hour a week internship for counseling students who are interested in gaining more clinical experience. Trainees are trained to conduct triage (initial assessment) and intake (full assessment) interviews and to provide counseling to students appropriate to the level of the trainee’s competence. Many of our trainees provide alcohol assessment and counseling to mandated client students from the university. Trainees may also gain experience in facilitating psychoeducational groups and outreach activities for university students.

Early Placement in SAP for Social Work Students (late June to May)

A 16 hour a week early placement practicum for social work students that are interested in providing alcohol assessment and counseling to mandated client students from the university. Trainees will also gain experience in facilitating mandated psychoeducational groups and assist the SAP coordinator in administrative activities for university students. 

Advanced MSW Field Placement (Two Semesters)

A 20 hour a week placement for social work students. The trainee will be responsible for the administration and management of health and wellness related issues. They will be working with the Case Manager and Clinical Director to assist in coordination of services for high risk students and aid with facilitating referrals for continuity of care for students needing longer-term treatment. The trainee will follow up with clients and track referrals through our electronic record keeping system. They will be engaged with assisting psychiatry to complete insurance authorizations and referrals to other services. The student will be exposed to the multiple roles within the Carruth Center and gain an understanding of the varying aspects of care management.
