Interactive Training Resources for WVU Faculty and Staff

Our college community is becoming increasingly aware of the amount of stress our students are experiencing and its negative impact on their health and academic performance. Student veterans and LGBTQ students may be facing additional ch allenges.


To address this concern, WVU has adopted a suite of FREE, online training simulations that will assist faculty, staff, and students to better identify, support, and refer these students to campus and community resources. 


Each simulation allows the user to interact with student avatars, receive feedback, and test various approaches in a risk-free environment.  The Kognito program is used in over 650 colleges and universities across the nation and is available to access online 24/7.




In each 30 minute module, training participants will have information commonly available to course instructors and staff members such as student grades, appearance, and behavior.  The user will role play conversations with emotionally responsive student avatars to practice and learn and to use open-ended questions, reflective listening and other motivational interviewing techniques to effectively:


  1. Broach the topic of emotional distress
  2.  Motivate the student to seek help
  3.  Avoid common pitfalls such as attempting to diagnose the problem or giving unwarranted advice


Course Descriptions

  At-Risk for Faculty & Staff  teaches users to identify, approach and connect students to campus support services. The program facilitates student retention, academic performance, and the overall safety of students, faculty, and the entire campus community.


LGBTQ on Campus for Faculty & Staff  helps create a more tolerant and inclusive campus for all students.  Users gain hands-on practice managing the challenging conversations surrounding issues of sexual orientation and gender identity, and master skills necessary to connecting students to help.


Veterans on Campus for Faculty & Staff  helps faculty and staff in understanding the needs, experiences and cultural issues affecting student veterans as they transition to college life. This program also teaches users how to recognize signs of distress and connect veterans to appropriate campus resources.


Learning Objectives

  In these courses, participants will learn:

  1. How to recognize the common warning sign s  of em otional distress and P.T.S.D.
  2. Ways to approach stude nts with greater skill and confidence and effectively refer them to campus mental health services, administrative support, and student groups on campus
  3. How to effectively manage a conversatio n , both on and off campus, around topics that may be sensitive to veteran and LGBTQ students
  4. Their local and college-specific resources

How to Utilize Kognito Training with Your Students

  • Assign Kognito as an out of class experience or extra credit opportunity (students are provided with a certificate upon module completion, additional class materials are available upon request) 
  • Identify student leaders and encourage them to complete the training
  • Require student, direct reports to complete the training as part of their job duties
